SODA, Amerikalı cam sanatçısı Jeffrey R. Sarmiento‘nun ’‘Books and Buildings –
Kitaplar ve Binalar’’ adlı sergisine 20 Haziran – 28 Temmuz 2012 tarihleri arasında ev sahipliği yapıyor.
Sergide yer alan büyük ebatlı eserler, ilhamını kentsel mimari yapıların cephelerinden alıyor. Eski fotoğraf, çizim ve el yazılarından esinlenilen görsellerin camın içine yerleştirildiği ’’Ansiklopedi’’ adlı seri 20 adet kitap bloktan oluşuyor.
Çalışmalarını İngiltere’de sürdüren Filipin asıllı Amerikalı sanatçı aynı zamanda Sunderland Üniversitesi Cam bölümünde doçentlik yapıyor. Sanatçı eserlerinde ilhamını etnik mimari yapılardan alan konuların üzerinde yoğunlaşırken, camın içinde görüntü katmanlarını çarpıştırarak yansıtıyor.
UrbanGlass, New York ve Fulbright , Danimarka’nın da içinde bulunduğu dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinde çalışmalarını devam ettirmiş sanatçı, 2008 yılında Bombay Sapphire Ödülllerinde finalist olmuş ve eserleri Collect fuarında Saatchi Gallery’de sergilenmiştir.
Jeffrey R. Sarmiento’nun eserleri İngiltere, Sunderland Müzesi ve Amerika’da Speed Müzesi’nin koleksiyonunda yer almaktadır. Sanatçının son çalışması ‘’Liverpool Haritası’’ adlı eseri Liverpool Müzesi’nde sergilenmektedir.
SODA is pleased to announce ‘’Books and Buildings’’, the first solo show of internationally renowned glass artist Jeffrey R. Sarmiento to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, between June 20 – July 28, 2012.
Jeffrey R. Sarmiento’s solo exhibition ‘’Books and Buildings’’, combines inspirations from local Northeast England history and the urban edifice with new fabrication methods in printed, cut and kilnformed glass.
The show will feature three wall mounted large-scale glass artworks inspired by the architectural façade and the library. The book is represented by Encyclopaedia, a grid of polished glass blocks with embedded with layered, screenprinted imagery inspired by historical photographs, glass science diagrams, and handwritten text.
Jeffrey R. Sarmiento
Jeffrey Sarmiento is Reader in Glass at the University of Sunderland. A Filipino- American artist, his work centers on constructed ethnicities, expressed through collisions of layered images within glass. He has worked widely in the US and Europe, including fellowships at UrbanGlass New York, and a Fulbright to Denmark. He was a finalist for the 2008 Bombay Sapphire Prize and has shown in Collect Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery. His work in the collection of Sunderland Museum, UK and the Speed Museum, USA. He has recently installed a monumental glass sculpture for the new Museum of Liverpool, UK.
